Wakamiya Shukokan
This large ash glazed four-lobed jar has been handed down in the Wakamiya family, a branch of the Hakusan Shrine in Gujo County, Gifu Prefecture. It is thought to have been made in the late Kamakura period (1185-1333), judging from the rounded shape of the thick, upright oral part and the sloping shoulders. It is molded with a water-glazed finish, and has a single stripe on the shoulder and two stripes in the center of the body, with four large chrysanthemum-shaped designs between them and three small chrysanthemum-shaped designs below the ears. On the upper edge of the shoulder, there are three pairs of double-line sword-tip seal mark flowers above the ears. The surface of the vessel shows a dull, medieval coloring.
