Since the Nara period (710-794), water jars have had a long life as one of the main types of Buddhist vessels. In the medieval period, the basic form remained unchanged and was produced in various regions, although the base was lost. In Tokoname, the neck of the mouth became thicker and the body more bulky during the Kamakura period (1192-1333), and the protruding band at the junction of the neck and shoulder became more exaggerated. This water jar has a particularly large band with radial incisions on the upper surface. It is a water bottle with characteristics typical of Tokoname.
