Tokoname jars were abundant in the Kamakura period, but by the Muromachi period (1333-1573), only simple vessels with a round body and a short neck were found. It is not yet clear whether this was due to the limitation of production to utilitarian wares or the unification of standards through concentrated production, but the simplification of vessel shapes is a common phenomenon seen in Muromachi period miscellaneous ware kilns.
