This is one of the typical early Tokoname sutra jars excavated from the Osugitani Sutra Mound, accompanied by a goshi of kagei blue. Originally a utilitarian vessel, this type of medium-sized jar was used in many places as an outer container for sutra tubes, and many of them were of excellent production. The reddish-brown vessel has a reddish-brown surface with a blue-black ash glaze running down the surface, giving it a distinctly early Tokoname atmosphere.
