Excavated from Itayama, Handa City, Aichi Prefecture
12th century
Height 34.0cm, mouth diameter 23.1cm, body diameter 34.5cm, bottom diameter 11.8cm
This jar is said to have been excavated from the Shiinoki kiln site in Itayama, Handa City. The neck of the mouth follows the ancient style, but the slightly protruding shoulder and the straight body diameter toward the small bottom are similar to those of a jar excavated from a sutra mound in the precincts of Hiizaki Oji Shrine in Wakayama Prefecture, indicating that it was made in the mid-12th century. The dark green natural glaze on the blackish-brown surface of the vessel makes it an impressive piece.
