Aside from jars used for sutra containers, practical medium-sized jars gradually became larger in size in the latter half of the 12th century. The neck of the mouth became shorter and slightly tilted inward, the opening of the mouth rim became smaller, and the edge of the mouth became thicker.
The molding was done in several steps by winding up the clay, and it is thought that the tension in the shoulders of the “abacus ball” shape was inevitable as the jar became larger in size.
