This is a large jar from the late Kamakura period, the peak period of the Tokoname kilns. Although it is not the largest jar from this period in size, it is the one that best represents the period.
The jar is shaped like an arithmetic bowl, and the striking of the seal on the outer surface of the joints of the rings is a characteristic of this period. The narrow band around the rim of the mouth is related to the refractoriness of the clay used.
