Suribachi, or large flat bowls, are one of the basic products of the medieval Sanchawan or Tokoname kilns, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This kataguchibachi is a shallow, flat-bottomed bowl with a large base, and a portion of the mouth rim protrudes outward in a kataguchi-shape. It is made of iron-rich clay and is extremely well finished, with a brownish-brown color and a natural glaze with a decayed-leaf color on the interior surface.
