This is one of the small jars with engraved design, a specialty of the Atsumi kilns. The clay is rich in sand, but it is weak against fire, causing blistering and distortion in places. The clay is rolled up and molded. The mouth rim is triangular in cross section but has few folds. The shoulder is engraved with two rows of arc patterns, each facing up and down, in a small drawing, and a kiln mark “mother” is engraved on one of the shoulders. The arc design is broken, and from the shape of the vessel, it is thought to date from the early 13th century.
