Atsumi carved jars and small jars like this one were often found in sutra mounds in the Ise and Kumano regions, along with Tokoname sanjiki jars. This jar is known to have been made in the 12th century, judging from its wide-mouthed, shouldered body. The shoulder is carved with a bold “D”. The shoulders are covered with a brush-painted ash glaze, which is black in the well-melted areas.
