Emonzaka Kiln Site Group

This is a group of Sue ware kiln sites located in Okazaki, Fukuroi City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The discovered kiln sites are a small group of four in total, but they date back to the first half of the 6th century, which is the same period as the Higashiyama Kiln in Aichi and the Kui Kiln in Mie as Sue ware kilns in the Tokai region. The Kiyogaya Kiln Site (Kiyogaya, Fukuroi City) is located near the Emonzaka Kiln. This kiln site group lasted from the Nara to Kamakura periods, and dozens of kiln sites have been confirmed. In addition to Sue ware kilns from the Nara and Heian periods, the Kiyogaya Kiln Site Group includes tile kiln sites where tiles from the Toe Kokubunji Temple were fired, kiln sites where ash glazed pottery was fired during the Heian period, and kiln sites from the late Heian to Kamakura periods. The Emonzaka kiln was operated in the first half of the 6th century, followed by the Kiyogaya kiln after a gap of about 200 years, but this area was one of the centers of ceramic production in the Toei region during the ancient and medieval periods, along with the Kosai kiln group. The Emonzaka kiln’s products include lid cups, tall cups, and various types of jars, but it is interesting to note that the shapes and details of the lid cups have much in common with Sue ware from the old Owari region, including the Higashiyama kiln, and that this kiln is related to the Emonzaka kiln.
