Ookayagama (Ookaya Kilns)

marusankakusikaku

This is a group of old kilns in Ohkaya, Kugari, Kani-cho, Kani-gun, Gifu Prefecture. They fired a lot of Kiseto, Shino, and Oribe ware, but not as many fragments of tea containers were found as in the Seto area. Umbagafutokoro in the western part of Ohgaya seems to be the oldest of the old kiln group here, and its age is estimated to be around the Genki/Tensho period (1570-92). At present, four kiln sites remain: Muta-do, Kiln-under, Naka, and Yashida. The most important of these is Muta-do, which is said to have been opened by Kato Genjuro Kagejo in 1577. Most of the Shino masterpieces are said to have been fired at this kiln. Shards of “Ubana-gamen,” “Sumiyoshi,” and “Take-noko tsutsu chawan (tea bowl with bamboo shoots)” have been found here.
