This is also a masterpiece among the black-glazed tea bowls of the Imperial Household, and it can be said to be a perfect match for the sunset. Compared to the sunset, which was rather soft and round, this one is quite bold in its design. In particular, the octagonal foot ring and the mountain-like grooves running vertically and horizontally along the sides of the foot ring are quite bold, and it is hard to believe that this is a Korean product.
As can be seen in the illustration, the black glaze on this tea bowl is exceptionally vivid. While the sunset-colored piece also features black, its brown undertones are quite pronounced, whereas the black of the “Hibakama” glaze has a purplish hue, reminiscent of a crow’s wet feathers. This contrast with the white glaze further emphasizes the boldness of the tea bowl. The patterns resembling a bell on the white background evoke the style of black Oribe ware. The interior of this tea bowl is also a masterpiece, with rough brushstrokes and splashes vividly imprinted, creating a dramatic and extraordinary scene.
