Amayū Tea Bowl, Inscribed “Kan-kiku,” by Dōnyū

Height: 8.8 cm, Mouth Diameter: 12.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 6.0 cm
This is likely one of Dōnyū’s earliest red raku tea bowls, and its form appears to be based on the Chōjirō-yaki style. The rim curves slightly inward, the body is slender and taut, and the lower section is rounded yet slightly raised. The foot is sharply carved, with a flat footring, and the character “Raku” is clearly stamped inside the foot. Yellow earthenware clay was applied with a brush over the raw clay body, and glaze was applied over that, resulting in a glaze color that shifts like amber glaze. Furthermore, some areas from the rim to the body show fire-induced color changes, and brushstrokes appear in yellow in certain sections. This is one of the representative works among Michiiri’s red raku tea bowls. On the underside of the inner box lid, Ittō has inscribed “Nonkou Red Tea Bowl, Kan-kiku (seal mark),” and on the outer box, Fuzan Seikō has inscribed “Nonkou Red Tea Bowl, also inscribed by Gensai, Kan-kiku (seal mark).”
