Kaikai-mon

The literal meaning is an Arabian-style pattern. In the broad sense, it refers to an arabesque pattern, a type of pattern used in the official kilns of the Ming dynasty in China. It can also be interpreted in a narrower sense as referring to the Arabic characters often inscribed on porcelain in response to demand from the many Arabs living in the Hui religious sphere and China. (Hobson, “Chinese Pottery and Porcelain.)
