A Chinese term for window painting. It refers to blue-and-white or color-painted vessels that have a window-shaped compartment in the area where the main design is depicted, and the other spaces are filled with detailed decorative designs. The window opens on the fine pattern area and the main pattern floats in the window. The main text within the window is often composed in a pictorial style of flowers, birds, figures, and landscapes. This technique was often used in five-color and powder paintings after Kangxi (1662-1722).
