Katae (pattern painting)

marusankakusikaku

Katae is a textile printing technique using stencils, and is mainly used for dyeing. It was originally used in Hizen (Saga and Nagasaki prefectures) and Mino (Gifu prefecture) porcelain, but was revived in Hizen in the early Meiji period (1868-1912) and spread to Mino and other regions by the middle of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The revivalist was Matsuo Kisaburo of Odashi Village, Kishima County, Saga Prefecture (Odashi, Nishikawatomachi, Takeo City) in 1874 (Meiji 7), but it was not until 1887 (Meiji 20) that it was introduced to Mino. It is said that a stencil maker in Shirako, Mie Prefecture (Shirako-cho, Suzuka City) was used at that time. However, the following year, copperplate engraving was restored in Mino as well, and katagami gradually declined.
