Common name for pottery in the western half of Japan. The term “Setomono” is used as a common name for pottery east of the Kinai region. However, there are some exceptions, such as Karatsumono in Ishikawa Prefecture and Setomono in Kochi Prefecture. In Kyushu, it is called Setomono.
In other words, Karatsu-mono was the area of trade in the early Edo period that was reached by ship from the port of Karatsu in Hizen Province (Saga Prefecture).
