Karatsu Oribe” means “Karatsu ware favored by Oribe,” and is mentioned in the Oribe ware section of the Kokin Wakan Shodo Gumicho (1694, ed. Genroku 7) as “There are two types of Oribe ware: Seto Oribe and Karatsu Oribe,” which is apparently the earliest known reference to this type. This is particularly true of the works of the Karatsu Koyamajigama kiln.
