Hidakari (fire gauge)

marusankakusikaku

Hidagari” is a type of pottery called hidagari found in Karatsu ware, Satsuma Kochosa, and other regions. These are vessels made by Korean potters who came to Japan after the Japanese invasion of Korea during the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592-8), using the original clay and glaze of Joseon. It means that only the fire (i.e., only the fuel) is Japanese. It is thought to have been made by lords who went to Joseon and loaded pottery clay and other materials on their return vessels, which were lighter in weight.
