Echizen ware: jar with two handles.

Echizen ware: jar with two handles.

16th century
Height 39.8 cm, mouth diameter 15.7 cm, body diameter 32.3 cm, bottom diameter 15.4 cm
The upright neck of this piece is nearly flat-rimmed at the apex, and the sloping shoulders indicate that this is a late Muromachi period piece. The body of the vessel is a common type of bimimi jar, but the bimimi attached to the shoulders are unusual in that they are twisted annular ears made of clay cord.
The entire surface of the shoulder is covered with a yellowish green natural glaze. There are kiln marks and a nail engraved on the shoulder.
