With its short, slightly outward-curving neck, long body with angular shoulders, and figure-eight base, this vase should be considered a variant of a Buddhist vase rather than a vase with a base. The body is thickly molded with a five-tiered joint, and the vessel’s surface has been smoothed out by scraping. The surface of the vessel was smoothed by shaving. The clay used was rather coarse, and the firing was extremely firm, with natural ash fall in the form of white sesame on the shoulder, part of the body, and the foot. There are no other examples of medieval pottery other than Kosedo, and this is the only example of a vase found in Suzu ware. Therefore, whether this vase is an influence of Kosedo or a continuation of the Heian period Sue ware tradition is an issue for future research, as well as the character of Suzu ware. This is a representative piece from the early Kamakura period.
