Excavated from Tennoji Sutra Mound, Iizaka-cho, Fukushima City
12th century
Height 39.7cm, Bore 18.2cm, Body 30.8cm, Bottom 12.4cm, Excavated from Tennoji Sutra Mound together with a sutra case, probably from Bishamonpei Kiln. It is valuable as a reference material from which the date can be determined. Although the clay is coarse and contains grains of sand, it is thin and shows elaborate workmanship due to the use of rolled-up clay and brushwork on the surface of the vessel.
It is interesting to note that the side edges of the bottom are shaped by scraping, which is similar to the technique used in Suzu ware, where the bottom was first made to a certain height and then the corded clay was grafted on top to form the vessel.
