Tennoji Temple
This sutra case was excavated from a sutra mound on the hill behind Tennoji Temple of the Myoshinji sect of the Rinzai Sect, along with various types of vases. It is a simple piece with a rolled-up clay cord and a surface that has been scraped and shaped. It was smoked and reduction-fired, and has a shiny blackish-brown color. The inscriptions on the sutra barrels excavated from the Yoneyama-ji and Hirasawa-ji sutra mounds also indicate that they were made by the same four persons, including Shirai Tomofusa.
