Shigaraki ceramics include a group of small vases with rather wide mouths and small vases with one side of the mouth.
These are smaller than the so-called “Uzukumaru” and do not have a rope pattern. These small jars have slightly outwardly folded mouth neck edges, and the mouth rim edges have faint traces of a double mouth. The shape is snarled, due to the use of corded clay with few feldspars. It is very well fired and has a red skin with natural accretion of white sesame powder. The body is painted with a tree with roots and a hemming pattern, which is rare in Koshigaraki ware. It is believed to have been influenced by the tree design found on medieval ceramics from various regions.
