This type of small katakuchi jar was widely produced in Iga and Shigaraki during the 15th and 16th centuries. Originally, they were probably a type of oil jar, but there are many examples of them being converted to warehouse boneware. This vessel was found in the precincts of the temple with a crystal pagoda (2.9 cm high) inside. The clay is iron-rich and well-fired, and it looks as if feldspar blown out of the brown ground has melted and scattered white dots over the entire surface.
