This is an imposing large jar with a short, convex lip and strong, stout shoulders. Although the neck of the mouth is slightly smaller, the sharply drawn edge of the mouth, the shape of the mouth, and the tension of the shoulders suggest that it was made in the Nanboku-cho period. The body was formed by grafting several steps, and the surface of the vessel was shaped with a brush. The clay is of high quality, rich in fine particles of feldspar and silica, and is well tempered, giving it a brownish-brown color that harmonizes with the dark green natural glaze on the shoulder, creating an ethereal atmosphere. A paulownia design is painted on the shoulder, and a wind seal is engraved a short distance away. Many of the excellent Tamba vases with engraved designs are from this period. This is one of the finest of the ancient Tamba large vases.
