Chōjirō: tea bowl, known as "Kyokusui", Red Raku

Height 8.7 cm, mouth diameter lO.O cm, high stand diameter 4.7 cm
The appearance of this tea bowl is similar to that of “Shirasagi”. It is small for a Chojiro’s tea bowl, with a rounded waist and a simple mouth structure, and is considered to be an early work.
The base of the bowl is rounded and the bowl is also rounded with tatami mats. Red clay seems to have been used and a transparent glaze was applied over it, but the glaze was thin and the firing temperature was low, so the glaze surface was quite rough. In particular, there is severe glaze loss on the inside. There are five marks left on the surface and four marks left on the base. There are some Aka-Raku tea bowls that have eye marks on the front, but it is not clear if they were decorative or if they were fired with some kind of inset. On the front of the inner box lid, Zuiryusai wrote “Red Tea Bowl” and on the back, “Chojiro Ware Red Tea Bowl, Sousa (Hanaseki)”. On the back of the outer box lid, Zuiryusai wrote “Chojiro ware red tea bowl, with Zuiryusai’s calligraphy in the box, Mein Kyokusui Left (Hanasho)”, which was made by Zuiryusai.
