 Asakura pepper is a specialty of Tamba, and many hexagonal pots inscribed with the characters “Asakura Sansho” were fired in the early Edo period as containers for the pepper, and are widely known as a specialty of Tamba ware. This jar is one of the representative examples of such Asakura sansho jars. It has a tight shoulder, a ball-rimmed mouth, and a hexagonal body, all in the same form. The front is engraved with the characters “Asakura Sansho. The mouth and the bottom of the body are covered with an ame glaze, while the shoulders and a part of the body show sea squirt glaze.
