Flat-bottomed vases began to show a trend toward flat bottoms in the late 7th century, but by the 8th century, they had flattened bodies with ridges on the shoulders and upright mouth necks.
In particular, the flattening of flat bottles made by the Tōyō kiln in the late 8th century is remarkable. The base of this vessel is a grayish-white, highly refractory clay with a high firing temperature.
