Set of small dishes with nandin tree design, enamelled Ninsei ware

Set of small dishes with nandin tree design, enamelled Ninsei ware

Height 4.9 cm, mouth diameter 15.0 cm, bottom diameter 4.8 cm
This is not an old Kiyomizu ware, but a work by Ninsei. However, this piece is shown here because such works by Ninsei had a strong influence on Kyo-yaki pottery of the time. There may have been many of them made in the past, but few examples can be found today. However, it is likely that the plates and bowls described in the “Bitan-ki” and other works of the same name were of this type.
This dish has a floral pattern with a finely carved floral flange on the guard and a gently rounded base, a small stand, and an earthenware showing within the stand. The front is decorated with a design of a nanten (a heavenly flower) on one side in gosu and iron rust with a plum-bowl design around the rim in color only, and the outside three sides are decorated with this design in underglaze blue, with a faint reddish tint to the glaze. The glaze is slightly reddish.
