This water jar is the same shape as the “Kouchi-style jar with a design of rough rocks”, but it is a unique work that uses the Kouchi and okiage techniques in layers. It is a slightly open cylindrical shape, and the entire body is thickly turned on the potter’s wheel, with the traces of the nokogoshi left on the body. The body is covered in a bright green glaze, and large chrysanthemums are raised on both sides of the body. The raised chrysanthemums in Figure 187 are covered in a transparent glaze, but this piece is unglazed, and the effect of the raised chrysanthemums, which are normally applied to the surface of the wood using powdered shell, is brought to life on the ceramic ware. The body and base are made of soft white clay, and the base has the marks left by the thread cutting. The mark “Eiraku” is stamped on the base, and on the lid of the box, it is written “Koji ware chrysanthemum vase ‘Uega mizusashi’ and on the bottom, ‘In Zenichirozo’. It is thought that the name Zenichiro was used from the first year of the Koka era (1844) to the first year of the Kaei era (1848), which was the heyday of conservation, so works by “Zenichiro” are particularly highly regarded.
