This is a water jar that closely resembles a curved water jar. The fact that the lid of the box is inscribed with the words “Ninsei curved-shape chrysanthemum design water jar” suggests that there may have been a water jar that could be called the original of this piece. The lid and body are left exposed at the joint and the bottom, while the rest is covered with a transparent glaze. The lid and body are decorated with gold leaf, and nine chrysanthemums are scattered on the body and three on the lid, with green overglaze pigment dotted on the surface to resemble scattered chrysanthemum leaves. The chrysanthemums are made using the so-called okiage technique, in which white clay is raised, and a thin, transparent glaze is applied. There are three feet on the bottom, and the mark “Eiraku” is stamped in between them. The lid of the box it came in is inscribed “Hozonzo”.
