The neck of the mouth is thin in comparison to the size of the body, giving it a weak appearance. The junction between the neck and shoulder is marked with a one-step buttress. It is made of iron-rich clay and is well fired, with a natural glaze covering the shoulder and part of the body.
The base is low and taut, a significant departure from the form of a metal water jar. It is inscribed “Daitennou” in red ink on the underside. It is thought to have been made by the Touyuu kiln.
