Although Hozon primarily reproduces Chinese ceramics such as Sometsuke, Jiaozhi, and Akae using skilled techniques, he also left behind outstanding works in the Kinrande style. This small bowl features a red-ground Kinrande exterior and a Sometsuke interior, imitating the design of the so-called “old Akae Kinrande” from the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty in China. The rim of the interior features alternating crane and peony motifs, while the sides are encircled by the eight-character inscription “似(以) 福東海如寿南山.” The interior surface displays a fine depiction of pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms within a circular motif. The exterior is entirely red, with phoenixes depicted within flames in gold on both sides, separated by a rough arrangement of peony and arabesque patterns. Inside the foot ring, a single circle is inscribed with the words “Made in Japan during the Eiraku era” in blue-and-white porcelain.
