This is a Dingko furnace for roasting Dingko. In the past, it was customary to roast the bark of the Dingko tree in the washroom to release an aroma and eliminate odors, and in Kyoto, such a luxurious Dingko furnace was probably used by the upper class. This is the finest example of one of the many surviving Kyoyaki Dingko furnaces. The entire piece is thinly made and decorated with wave and thunder patterns in overglaze enamels, while the lid of the kettle and the furnace are openworked with a mokuremon or cloisonne design.
