Overall, the bowl is thin-walled; the rim curves slightly inward, the body is slightly rounded, and the waist tapers slightly. However, the rounded curve from the waist to the foot is characteristic of Dōnyū’s style. The foot is left unglazed, and the character “Raku” is stamped inside the foot ring. The black glaze is applied thickly, with some areas forming a curtain-like glaze. However, there is a large area of glaze loss on one side of the body; it appears white glaze was applied to that section, but the glaze may have cracked, revealing the bare clay. This is a tea bowl with a glaze application that is rare for Dōnyū. The footring is narrow, and the foot is somewhat small. This piece was once owned by Matsudaira Fumai, who inscribed “Yellow Crane Tower” on the lid’s exterior and “Nonkou Black Tea Bowl (signature)” on the lid’s interior in vivid brushstrokes.
