Red Tea Bowl, Inscribed “Wakayama Dōnyū”

Height: 8.0 cm; Mouth diameter: 10.8–11.3 cm; Foot diameter: 5.2 cm
Nomura Art Museum
This tea bowl is renowned as one of the “Seven Nonkou Varieties.” Like those shown in Figures 53 and 54, a small seal mark is stamped inside the foot ring; it is generally believed that such small seal marks were used on early works. Indeed, this bowl does not display Dōnyū’s characteristic stylistic traits very strongly; the overall form is subdued, the body is slightly tapered, and the inward-curving rim forms gentle undulations. The footring is wide, with chamfered corners, and the interior of the footring has been carved out sharply and deeply. Near the footring, a triangular section of bare clay is exposed, revealing a rich, sticky red clay, while the rest of the bowl is covered in a soft sandy glaze. Since it came from the Suganuma family of Wakayama, Jushinsai inscribed it with the name “Wakayama.”
