This is a cylindrical tea bowl with a tapered rim and a gentle, rounded form from the body to the waist. The compact foot has a narrow base; a seal is stamped inside the flat-carved foot, and another is stamped next to the carved tea pool on the interior. The glaze applied over the entire surface has melted well, resulting in a vivid reddish-brown tea bowl characteristic of Tokui. The underside of the lid bears Ryōin’s signature. Since Tokui was frail and died at the age of thirty, many of his works were later signed by his younger brother, Ryōin.
