This is a generously sized cylindrical tea bowl with a thin rim that curves inward, featuring a rounded profile from the middle to the foot. Many of Ryōnyū’s tea bowls emulate Dōnyū’s style in form and glaze texture, and this bowl is no exception. The foot has a flat base, with a deep hollow carved into the interior, leaving fine swirls along the edges of the carving. White clay is left exposed from the foot to the body, while the rest is covered in black glaze. However, emulating Dōnyū’s distinctive technique of leaving areas unglazed, the so-called “yellow patches” are scattered both inside and outside the bowl. The artist’s retirement seal is stamped beside the tea pool in the interior, and “Kantoken” is carved on the side of the foot. Therefore, this work is believed to have been created after Ryōnyū turned sixty-three. The accompanying box bears the inscription “Black Cylindrical Tea Bowl by Ryōnyū (signature),” and Seisai Sōsa has further authenticated it with the inscription “Black Tea Bowl by Ryōnyū, inscribed ‘Fuyukago-sa’ (signature).”
