Tannyũ: tea bowl, known as “Hanazuri-goromo”, Red Raku

Height: 8.6 cm, Mouth Diameter: 11.5 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.5 cm
This tea bowl has a modest, understated form with a slightly inward-curving rim and is thin throughout. A tea pool has been carved into the interior, and a low, slightly oversized footring is attached to the base. The entire bowl, except for the interior of the footring, is coated with ochre and covered with a transparent glaze; however, it is a so-called “sand glaze,” and the green fire-change patterns have been vividly fired. The Raku seal, bestowed by Lord Tokugawa Harutaka of Kishu, is clearly stamped in the center of the footring interior; it was made between the ages of 32 and 51. On the underside of the inner box lid, Gen’en-sai has inscribed, “Red Tea Bowl, called ‘Flower-Patterned Robe’—Gen’en (signature),” and on the bottom is a handwritten inscription by Dan’nyu.
