This tea bowl has a gentle, understated appearance with a thin overall construction. The seal stamped in the center of the foot is the artist’s retirement seal, used after he turned fifty-one. The rim, with its gentle undulations, curves inward, slightly tapering the body. The foot is small, and the rim is narrow. The glaze applied around the foot has melted well, creating a curtain-like effect on both the interior and exterior; where the glaze breaks, white snake-and-scorpion glaze appears, creating a distinctive pattern. The inscription “Yamaji no Yuki” (Snow on the Mountain Path) by Gengensai on the underside of the inner box lid was likely inspired by this very pattern.
