Ryōnyü: tea bowl with sacred gem design, Red Raku

Height: 8.5 cm, Mouth diameter: 11.8 cm, Foot diameter: 5.0 cm
This is a thin-walled, semi-cylindrical tea bowl. The exterior features a band of ridges that cinch the body, creating a form with a high waist. A double tea pool has been carved out in the center of the interior, and a stepped pattern runs around the inside. The footring is flat and understated, with a folded edge. A hood-shaped indentation is formed inside the footring, and fine chamfered ridges run around the base. Two beads are painted with white slip on one side of the exterior, and one on the other; the entire piece is glazed, but fire-change patterns appear on a portion of the exterior, while the rest has fired to a vivid red Raku finish. A kiln mark is stamped beside the foot.
The box is the original one, inscribed with “Bead-painted Red Tea Bowl, Raku Kichizaemon.”
