Ichigen: cylindrical tea bowl, known as “Tatsuta”, Red Raku

Height: 8.9 cm, Mouth Diameter: 9.9 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.5 cm
Chokusui Art Museum
This tea bowl is modeled after the style of Seto-kuro. The rim features an interesting variation in height in the Yamaji style, while the body employs strong vertical ridges to convey a sense of power. The foot is low and irregularly shaped, further evoking the aesthetic of Seto-kuro. The base is flat, and the carving inside the foot is skillfully executed. The area from the waist to the foot is left unglazed to reveal the raw clay, while the body and interior are covered in a yellowish red Raku glaze. Although it likely uses yellow earth as a base, it has fired to a somewhat pale tone. Near the foot rim are the “Raku” seal and the carved inscription “Ichigen.” On the underside of the inner box lid, Ittō has written, “Ichigen Red Cylinder Tea Bowl, Tatsuta (seal),” and on the front, “Ichigen Red Cylinder Tea Bowl, also bearing the Gensai seal, inscribed Tatsuta (seal).”
