Enji (rouge, Enko)

marusankakusikaku

Red pigment, commonly called Enko. There are two types depending on the raw materials used. One is gold dissolved in royal water, to which is added tin chloride or other similar reducing agent to obtain a fine powder deposit of purple gold. This is cassius, so to speak. The other is called “ordinary pink,” made from chromium compounds, which is less expensive, but it is not yet a perfect substitute for gold as an underglaze red color for porcelain.
