A type of overglaze enamels completed in the Ming Dynasty of China. The paint is transparent and shows through the base, giving it a cold, hard feeling. This is why it is also called “Gosai” (硬彩). The origin of the five-color paints is old, and the lead, soda, and semi-lead glazes of the Tang Three Celadon glazes were the origin of the five-color paints.
By the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty (1522-1666), it was nearly complete, and the five-color paintings of the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty (166-1722) were greatly admired by Qing dynasty connoisseurs.
