Ceramic smoking pipes have long existed in Europe, where they are known as pipe clay. In Japan, the “Kohroku” of 1782 illustrates the use of a Korean potter who emigrated from Maeyogawa, Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture). In recent years, a considerable number of smoking pipes have been unearthed during excavations of old kilns in Mino Province (Gifu Prefecture). They are made of Kizeto, Shino, Oribe, etc., and are said to have been made during the Tensho and Keicho periods (1573-1615). In Joseon, there are also smoking pipes made of white porcelain and other materials. Some of them are made of porcelain, while others have only the nape made of porcelain.
