Gray Shino tea bowl with geometric pattern known as higaki

Height 7.8 cm, mouth diameter 13.9 cm, base diameter 6.8 cm
Hatakeyama Memorial Museum
This is one of the representative works of Nezumi-Shino tea bowls together with “Mine Momiji” from the collection of the Gotoh Museum, “Yamahata” from the collection of the Nezu Museum, and “Sazanami”. The body is covered with a hinokigaki pattern in fine lines, and on one side, a tozan pattern is expressed in comb writing. The entire surface of the bowl, except for the base, is covered with thick Shino glaze, and perhaps the oniita was not made up well enough, resulting in a soft whitish nezumi-shino finish, but the burnt surface of the oniita is vividly apparent from the prospective to the waist area, creating a glazed surface that is deeply pleasing. The mouth is almost triangular, and there are two cracks in the kiln. Many Nezumi-Shino tea bowls seem to be made with a waist-high style like this.
