Height 13.0 cm, Bowl diameter 18.9 x 22.3 cm, Four legs
This is one of Oribe’s large and attractive works of art, which also includes a hand bowl. This is a long lidded bowl with four sides and corners, and its body rises deeper and more generously than the usual simmered bowls. In the center of the flat lid is a 16-petaled chrysanthemum flower in relief, which serves as a knob. The body is made one step deeper from the waist to the bottom, and has legs on all four sides of the underside. The body and lid are both covered with green glaze on the opposite sides. The margins of the lid are decorated with a pole with a curling vine, a pine tree, and an abstract pattern of white circles on a black ground. The finish of the ware is rare for Oribe lidded wares, and the glaze is very soft.
The green glaze has been broken off and turned reddish cinnabar, which is also an unskillful scene. The inner surface of this type of bowls and lids, which are commonly molded by molding, has a cloth pattern, and there are also three marks on the prospective surface.
This pottery once belonged to the Konoike family in Osaka, and “Seto Lidware” is written on the back of the lid of the box.
