This so-called “arithmetic ball” shaped jar with a strongly stretched body is widely known as a representative example of E-Taratsu ware. The wide mouth is low and sharply bowed at the ends, while the base is solidly carved out in a straight and simple manner. One side of the body is decorated with a pattern of ashi and flowers spreading from side to side, while the other side is decorated with arabesques in the shape of a bend in a circle. The entire surface, except for the base, is covered with a feldspar glaze mixed with earth and ash, but the glaze is frizzled at some of the base. This is one of the largest of the painted karatsu jars, and one of exactly the same shape and design is in the collection of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum. A similar ceramic fragment was excavated from the kiln site of Koraishin, Ichinose.
